The Role of Nutrition in Supporting Your Immune System

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in supporting a robust immune system, especially during challenging times. At Centers Healthcare, we emphasize the importance of a well-balanced diet to fortify your body’s natural defenses. Incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, as they contribute to immune health. Adequate protein from sources like lean meats, legumes, and dairy supports the production of antibodies. Ensure sufficient intake of zinc, selenium, and vitamin D, which are known to enhance immune function. Hydration is key, as it helps maintain mucous membrane integrity, a critical barrier against infections. By making informed dietary choices, you empower your immune system to face the demands of daily life.

Social Security Payments in Line for a Big Increase in 2023 to Keep Pace With Inflation

In good news for those drawing Social Security payments, the monthly amount you will receive will go up more year-over-year than it has in over 40 years.

With inflation pacing at around 9%, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced an increase in benefits of 8.7%, which is the highest yearly increase since 1981. That’s on top of the 6.4% that was seen last year.

“Medicare premiums are going down and Social Security benefits are going up in 2023, which will give seniors more peace of mind and breathing room. This year’s substantial Social Security cost-of-living adjustment is the first time in over a decade that Medicare premiums are not rising and shows that we can provide more support to older Americans who count on the benefits they have earned,” Acting SSA Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi said in a press release.

Your specific increase will be sent sometime in December, but experts believe that the average increase will be a little over $140 per month.

Troy Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has details in four other changes taking place with Social Security in 2023.

Maximum Taxable Earnings Increasing

More of a high-earner’s income will be subject to Social Security taxes, going from $147,000 this year to $160,200 in 2023.

Maximum Benefit to Also Rise

The maximum benefit for those who are retiring at their full retirement age (67 for anyone born after 1960) is going from $3,345 to $3,627.

Benefit for Widows and Disabled Workers Going Up

The average benefit for widows and disabled workers are going up at a similar rate as the traditional Social Security benefit.

Medicare Premiums Will Be Lower

As alluded to above, some Medicare premiums will drop in 2023. While these are separate programs, many people who claim Social Security benefits are also enrolled in Medicare, so this will be a little more money in seniors’ pockets as well.

4 Ways to Lower Your Internet Bill

It’s estimated that around 25 million people gave up cable television—aka cut the cord—over the past decade. But while that represents a cost saving (depending on how many streaming services you subscribe to!), one charge that we seemingly can’t avoid is high-speed internet in the home.

The average American pays around $61 per month for internet service, but that can be higher if you’re in a household that uses several streaming devices at once. And like cable, some areas are only serviced by one provider, so prices can be higher in those areas due to a lack of competition.

But there are avenues that just about any of us can take to lower our monthly internet bill. Troy Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at four of those strategies.

  1. Government Subsidies

People enrolled in Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, a Federal Pell Grant, Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit, and other government services are eligible for a $30 monthly discount on home internet service. Visit this website for more information on eligibility.

  1. Check Your Speed

You may be paying for far more internet than you need. If you’re in a home with just one or two people and only go online to check email, browse social media, and watch the occasional YouTube video, you don’t need any more than 25 mbps of service. You really need over 100 mbps of speed if there are multiple people in your home using streaming devices at the same time.

  1. Buy a Modem and Router

Some internet service providers (ISPs) bundle in the cost of the equipment into your monthly bill, but others will list it as a rental and a separate charge. A quality modem and router can be had for $200, but if you’re paying $10 per month to rent these devices, you will easily end up saving money in the long run.

  1. Negotiate and Don’t Be Afraid to Switch

If you’re in an area where there is competition for your ISP business, use that to your advantage. If you don’t mind switching every couple of years, you’ll probably be able to get promotional rates for a one- to two-year period. Sometimes, you don’t need to switch to save. Just calling up your provider and expressing dissatisfaction with what you’re paying and what the competition is offering can be enough to lower your bill.

5 Supermarket Items That Can Be a Waste of Money

With food prices rising, many people are pouring over their food budgets to see where they can save some money.

The thing about the supermarket is that you’re not only paying for the food itself, but you’re paying for convenience in many products.

Troy Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at five items that can be considered a waste of money since you can instead spend a little time and effort in preparing them yourself.

  1. Bottled Water

Bottled water is not only a waste of plastic, it’s also around 3,000% more expensive than drinking water out of the tap. Of course, if there are concerns over tap water in your area (check yours here), you’ll want to find an alternative, and even if you want to avoid drinking straight out of the tap, you can use a filter on your refrigerator or sink that is a fraction of what many people spend on bottled water.

  1. Shredded Cheese

It’s cheaper to buy a block of cheese and shred it yourself, but you’ll also get more cheese after shredding. That’s because additives like cellulose can be in pre-shredded bags of cheese and actually leave you with less product.

  1. One-Cup Coffees

One-cup coffee brewers are extremely convenient, but you’re paying a lot for the time you save. A coffee pod is generally 50 to 75 cents each. A better alternative is to use your one-cup brewer for convenience, but buy pre-ground coffee instead of using the pods. Even better—bu. y whole beans from a wholesale or warehouse store and grind them yourself.

  1. Produce

Fruits and vegetables—especially pre-packaged or pre-cut ones—will be far more expensive at the supermarket than at your local produce stand or farmers market. A farmers market will also have food that’s fresher and likely organic.

  1. Energy or Granola Bars

Instead of spending top dollar on energy or granola bars, buy the ingredients (nuts, dark chocolate chips, dried fruit) yourself. In addition to saving money, you are also eating a healthier snack because the pre-packaged bars typically contain lots of added sugar.
